What the Research Says About Molecular Hydrogen

H2 Analytics independent hydrogen water testing and certification seal

Molecular hydrogen (H2) has been studied in a growing body of peer-reviewed research since its selective antioxidant mechanism was first documented in 2007. Below is a plain-language summary of six published findings: what they looked at, and what they found. A few notes before you read them: these are studies of molecular hydrogen generally, not clinical trials of any specific product, including TRUE's. Hydrogen water is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease, and individual results vary.

The foundational mechanism (2007)

The study that started hydrogen water research as a field. Researchers showed that molecular hydrogen could selectively neutralize particularly reactive, harmful oxygen radicals, like the hydroxyl radical, while leaving more useful reactive oxygen species alone. That selectivity, not just blanket antioxidant activity, is what's made hydrogen interesting to researchers since. (Nature Medicine, 2007)

Cholesterol and triglycerides (Pharmaceuticals, 2023)

A pooled analysis of 7 randomized controlled trials, 256 participants total, found that hydrogen-rich water significantly lowered triglycerides, with modest reductions in total and LDL cholesterol as well. (Pharmaceuticals, 2023)

Muscle recovery in elite athletes (Journal of Lifestyle Medicine, 2025)

In a study of 22 elite female athletes, hydrogen-rich water increased peak muscular torque after warm-up and lowered creatine kinase, a blood marker associated with muscle damage from intense exercise. (Journal of Lifestyle Medicine, 2025)

Sprint and power performance (Metabolites, 2024)

A review of exercise trials found hydrogen-rich water improved repeated-sprint times in footballers and power output in competitive rowers. (Metabolites, 2024)

Liver enzyme levels (Gastroenterology and Hepatology from Bed to Bench, 2024)

Pooling 8 clinical trials, 433 patients total, researchers found hydrogen-rich water modestly reduced liver enzyme levels compared to regular water. (Gastroenterology and Hepatology from Bed to Bench, 2024)

Gut bacteria and fatty liver remission (Antioxidants, 2023)

In adults with impaired fasting glucose, 73 participants, hydrogen-rich water reshaped gut bacteria composition and more than doubled fatty-liver remission rates compared to plain water. (Antioxidants, 2023)

The honest summary

None of this means hydrogen water is a treatment for anything. It means there's a real, published, peer-reviewed body of research into what molecular hydrogen does in the body, with consistent findings around antioxidant activity, metabolic markers, and exercise recovery. That's a genuinely different starting point than most wellness trends, and it's also exactly why we separate what the research says from what we claim about our own products.
